Finding Strength in Vulnerability: Psalm 121

Finding Strength in Vulnerability: Psalm 121 When Life Feels Overwhelming

My head was reeling from reading the headlines, seeing the MyChart message saying that I need even more tests, and the text that left me speechless about how people could be so mean and self-centered. The emotions run rampant as you snap that picture of your now-grown child in their cap and gown, convinced it was only yesterday when you held their hand and walked them into kindergarten. Life’s vulnerability might be something you also relate to. When you feel vulnerable to the collapse of humanity, physical illness, relational rejection, or the emotional turmoil of your child growing up, life can make us feel small, overwhelmed, and weak.

Psalm 121

I found myself in Psalms this morning, and not one that I usually read. As I looked through my Bible, this particular Psalm seemed to be one that I held for those times when I was weak. In Psalm 121, a song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem, the first verse meets me right where my heart is: “I look up to the mountains–does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth!” (Psalm 121:1-2 NLT). The Creator of the universe, the one who hung the stars, the one who made the platypus have a flat bill, is my helper.

Despite the circumstances I have, despite the diagnosis, the emotions, the financial struggles, my help comes from the Lord. In my messy handwriting beside this verse, I’ve written, “You are my helper, eyes off my circumstances and on God!” That handwritten note summed up what I needed to do that morning. I needed to change my focus off my circumstances, which are constantly changing, and refocus on God. The One who created me in His image (Genesis 1:27).

Psalm of Comfort

The author continues with this psalm of comfort, “He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.” (Psalm 121:3-4 NLT). God never sleeps; He never takes a break from watching over His people. Being part of God’s people means we have someone constantly watching over us, protecting us. Though ‌it may not seem like it, especially when those circumstances seem to overwhelm us, He is there. He cares so much for us: “‘For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.’” (John 3:16 NLT). God gave His only Son, so we wouldn’t perish; that is love. Never doubt the love of the Lord for you.

He Never Sleeps

While the Lord never sleeps, He also protects us and never leaves us. “The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.” (Psalm 121:5-8 NLT). The Lord protects us, providing what we need, when we need it. God doesn’t stop protecting or providing for us; He keeps watch over us. Wherever we are, where we go, and whatever our circumstances, the Lord watches over all of it.

While it’s easy to get caught up in the fragility of life, making us feel vulnerable and weak, we know that our God is there. He’s right beside us, walking through the storms with us. He’s protecting us and keeping watch over us. As I finished my Bible study that day, I felt a renewal, a calm that can only come from the Lord. No longer was I focusing on my circumstances, but I was zeroed in on the Creator, my protector, and my strength. The next time you feel vulnerable and overwhelmed, I encourage you to place your hope in the helping hands of the Lord. He’s there waiting with arms wide open to comfort you.
