Is it selfish to take time for yourself? Today I share a Biblical perspective on rest and self-care.
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (WEB)
For years, I believed that putting myself last was simply part of being a good wife, mom, and Christian. I poured into everyone around me while convincing myself that taking time to rest and recharge was selfish. It wasn’t until my journey with chronic illness that God began teaching me a powerful truth: caring for the body and soul He entrusted to me isn’t selfish but stewardship.
If you’ve ever felt guilty for saying “no,” taking a break, or making some time for yourself, you are not alone. Our culture celebrates busyness, but Scripture reminds us that even Jesus stepped away to rest. God never intended for us to live exhausted and running on empty constantly.
Recently, I had the privilege of sharing this message in an article for The Grit and Grace Project. In this article, I share how caring for yourself isn’t an act of selfishness but one of obedience to God. When we allow God to refresh our hearts, we are better equipped to love, serve, and care for the people He has placed in our lives.
After you’ve read this article, I’d love for you to share your thoughts in the comments. What’s one small way you can care for yourself this week without guilt?
