Megha Rai joins us today to share, “What Every Parent Needs More Than Answers.”
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
John 14:26 (ESV)
My phone rang early one morning.
On the other end was my sister, crying.
As she poured out her heart, I could hear the helplessness in her voice. She was overwhelmed by the growing rebellion of her eldest daughter, who is navigating that difficult season between the teenage years and adulthood. Every conversation seemed to end in conflict. Every attempt to guide her daughter was met with resistance.
“I don’t know what to do anymore,” she kept saying.
As I listened, my heart broke for her.
Parenting Teenagers
Parenting teenagers can be one of the most stretching seasons of life. There are no perfect words, no guaranteed formulas, and no parenting manual that prepares us for every challenge.
My sister is not a believer, and as I listened to her, I realized she was carrying the entire weight of her daughter’s future on her own shoulders. She believed that every outcome depended solely on her wisdom, her words, and her ability to fix the situation.
That conversation stayed with me long after we hung up.
Questions
It also made me ask myself an important question.
What makes a believer respond differently when faced with the very same situation?
I am a mother to a teenage son. Like every parent, I have moments when fear whispers, frustration rises, and I want immediate answers. There are days when I want to react instead of responding.
Yet, over and over again, I have witnessed the quiet ministry of the Holy Spirit.
He stops me before my emotions take over.
He convicts me when my words become sharper than they should be.
He reminds me to pray before I speak.
He replaces my anxiety with peace and my desire to control with a willingness to trust God.
The Holy Spirit doesn’t remove the challenges of parenting, but He transforms the parent walking through them.
Perhaps that is one of His most beautiful works.
Before He changes our children, He often begins by changing us.
He teaches us patience when we would rather rush.
He grows gentleness when we feel provoked.
He produces self-control when emotions threaten to rule our hearts.
He reminds us that our children ultimately belong to God before they belong to us.
Raising Perfection
As believers, our hope is not found in our ability to raise perfect children. Our hope is found in the God who loves them even more than we do and who has given us His Spirit to guide us every step of the way.
Looking back, I realized that while my sister and I both face the uncertainties of parenting, I never have to face them alone.
The Holy Spirit walks beside me, correcting me, comforting me, and continually pointing me back to Christ.
Parenting is not just about raising children.
It is also about allowing God to raise us.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, thank You for being my Helper. When parenting feels overwhelming, remind me that I do not walk this journey alone. Teach me to respond with patience instead of frustration, with wisdom instead of fear, and with faith instead of anxiety. Shape my heart even as I seek to shape the hearts of my children. Help me trust that You are at work in ways I cannot always see. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
