Kim Walker shares how, after several painful seasons, she exited them with holy grit and spiritual resilience.
Only by the grace of God do I find the strength to exit seasons of deep hurt, disappointment, anger, and exhaustion.
We all have them. As Christians, we were never promised an easy life, but we were warned of the opposite. In this life, we will face trials. Sad, huh? I know!
What we are promised is a Savior, a friend, a helper to walk alongside us through all of our seasons. I am so grateful for the Holy Spirit because I sincerely do not have the slightest idea how I could have made it through my painful times.
God is…
He is close, always near, faithful, and trustworthy.
My most recent season had me facing one of the most difficult times in my business. I was having to help lead us through this time with my husband and our leadership team, while also being the face of strength and perseverance in a cloud of witnesses. It was not easy, but it was certainly doable with Christ. Add to that, the first anniversary of losing my momma. I was not looking forward to it, but I was planning and preparing for whatever that monumental day would bring. I took the day off from work, did some things to honor my momma’s memory, and incorporated some self-care that day. The very next day, we entered into a tragedy of losing our 33-year-old niece. For four pain-filled, traumatic days, I sat beside her hospice bed watching her frail body fade away.
I was exhausted.
I was undone.
I was enraged.
I was at peace.
I was confused.
I was all the things.
Exiting the Season
I know I am coming out of that season because I can feel it; I can see it, and I sense it. I refuse to move forward without bringing something positive with me. Whether it is learning something, or just a nugget of truth that will water my faith seeds as I move forward.
I remember the phrase “suffer well”, and I understand it. To suffer well, to endure, to run with endurance – all of these help me to rely on my faith, have hope in the future, and feel His presence in every moment.
Hebrews 12
This morning, as I read Hebrews 12, I stopped and took a deep breath after I read verse 12. Do you ever have those moments when you read something, and then go back up and re-read it because you know it was meant for you in that moment? That’s the verse. Hebrews 12:12 (CSB) says, “Therefore, strengthen your tired hands and weakened knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed instead.”
I have learned that anytime a verse starts with ‘therefore’, it means something. You must go back and read what was going on prior to see the context. Reading the section prior to verse 12, I read about a dark season of endurance and discipline. I can’t help but feel this relates to my season, and maybe yours. A season of being tired, worn out, carrying the load of myself and so many others, feeling like I’m on shaky ground, discouraged, and ready to just give up. But, God calls us out of that spiritual darkness, of being spiritually tired, exhausted, and undone. Verse 12 calls us to lift up our eyes, raise our hands & arms, plant our feet, and re-engage in our faith. It’s all about taking responsibility for our posture. Pull it together and resume a posture of strength and endurance. It’s the keep going part.
Holy Grit & Spiritual Resilience
This is holy grit. It is spiritual resilience. It is failing forward. It’s God recognizing our pain, understanding where we are, acknowledging the heaviness, but also offering his hand of grace and saying “stand up” and “let’s go”.
I love that. If you are a mom who is just undone, a leader who is tired of being the strong one, a faith-filled woman who is tired of carrying it all, or someone who just wants to sit down and stay there – God is not finished! He is calling to you, saying, “I’ve got more for you – there’s hope – let’s go grab it!”
I encourage you to read Hebrews 12:1-12 and let God love on you, and his strength sink deep into your soul, re-energize you. Feel the deep sense of God-given authority and heavenly responsibility for your spiritual posture.
