Sarah S. Brown, author, speaker, and freelance writer, joins us today to share her story of God’s faithfulness in her struggle.
There’s a kind of tired that doesn’t come from lack of sleep—it comes from carrying something too heavy for too long.
I remember standing in my tiny kitchen, staring at a bill I couldn’t pay, and feeling like the walls were closing in. As a single mom, I had learned to stretch a dollar until it practically begged for mercy. I clipped coupons, made simple meals, and said no to outings that cost more than gas money. But even with all the scrimping and saving, some months felt impossible.
That day was one of them.
I had just opened a piece of mail—an unexpected bill I hadn’t planned for. Sitting down at the kitchen table, my son playing quietly in the next room, and just stared at the paper in front of me. I didn’t cry or pray. I just… froze.
Because what do you do when you’re doing your best and it still doesn’t feel like enough?
Letting Go
That season of my life taught me more about trust than any sermon ever could.
I wasn’t just carrying bills—I was carrying fear. Fear that I wasn’t providing well enough. I feared I was failing my son. Fear that I’d always be in survival mode, barely scraping by. I’d smile at church and say I was fine, but inside I was exhausted—financially, emotionally, spiritually.
I knew God was my Provider. I could quote the verses. But believing it in theory and depending on it in reality? That’s where the rubber meets the road.
And I was out of road.
That night, after my son went to bed, I sat in the living room with the lights off and whispered what felt like a defeated prayer:
“God, I can’t do this. I need You to show up.”
It wasn’t eloquent or poetic. It was desperate.
But sometimes desperation is exactly where surrender begins.
I laid the bill down and told the Lord, “I don’t know how, but I’m trusting You with this.” And I meant it. For the first time in a while, I wasn’t holding on to control. I wasn’t trying to hustle my way through. I was handing it over—completely.
Provision to the Penny
A couple of days later, I opened the mailbox to find an envelope from a company I hadn’t heard from in ages. Inside was a refund check. I looked at the amount and felt chills—it matched the bill I had been worried about to the exact cent.
The exact. Cent.
I sat down on the front steps and just laughed. Not because I had figured anything out, but because I hadn’t—and God had still taken care of it.
In that moment, Psalm 55:22 came alive for me:
“Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you.” (NIV)
I had worried. He had already made a way.
I had panicked. He had already planned.
I had reached the end of my strength—and found the beginning of His faithfulness.
That wasn’t the only time God showed up for me financially. It happened over and over again—groceries provided, gas tanks stretched, needs met in ways I never saw coming. It didn’t mean life was easy, or that I never faced hardship again. But it did mean I wasn’t carrying it alone.
If You’re Holding Something Heavy Today…
Maybe you’re not facing a bill you can’t pay, but maybe you’re carrying something just as heavy—a decision, a diagnosis, a relationship that’s unraveling. You’re doing everything you know to do, but it still feels like too much.
I’ve learned that sustain doesn’t always mean “solve.”
Sometimes it means God gives you just enough strength for today.
Sometimes it looks like peace that doesn’t make sense, or provision that shows up right on time.
But every time, it means you’re not carrying it alone.
Psalm 55:22 isn’t just a verse. It’s an invitation:
To cast. To trust. To be sustained.
You don’t have to hold it all together.
Or have it all figured.
You don’t even have to know the next five steps.
You just need to know the One who carries what you can’t.
Surrender isn’t giving up—it’s giving it to God.
And trust me, He knows exactly what to do with it.
A Prayer for the Struggling Heart
Lord, I’m tired. I’ve been trying to do it all in my own strength, and it’s wearing me down. I surrender this burden to You. I trust that You see, You know, and You will provide—maybe not in the way I expect, but always in the way I need. Teach me to lean into Your presence more than my plans. Thank You for being faithful. Amen.
