As a Bible Gateway Blogger Grid Partners member, I received this free resource as part of my participation in the program. Now for my review of The New Testament for Everyone, 3rd Edition a Fresh Translation by N.T. Wright. As you can tell by the name it is only the New Testament. It is not specifically labeled as large print, but it is printed in a larger font than most Bibles. A brief synopsis and background precede each book of the New Testament.
The introduction explains how this resource is specifically a translation, not simply a paraphrase like many newer resources are. There is a lengthy introduction explaining why the author wrote this resource the way it’s written. He goes into depth regarding the original Greek text and how we just don’t speak that way in modern-day English. There are places where the translation just doesn’t do justice to the original Greek phrasing.
According to the author, “…this translation was made originally in order to accompany a series of “guides” or popular commentaries on the New Testament. This series (Matthew for Everyone and the rest) was itself designed for people who would never normally read a “biblical commentary,” but who just wanted some help to get into the text for themselves.” (Wright ix)
The margins are large so you can write notes on the sides of the pages, which is a major bonus in my opinion. The book is hardcover and comes with a dust jacket box that gives you the actual print size on the back. I thought that was a selling point, as it gives you a clear idea of what’s inside. I think if you are looking to read just the New Testament it would be worth checking out, it would make a nice gift for someone.
