“People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will be exposed.”
Proverbs 10:9 NLT
This week I faced a dilemma. I had the opportunity to pursue a project that would be what I like doing, and it was for pay. Initially, I was excited – the project was exactly in line with my strengths – then I started researching and found that the organization and I have different values. So I could either take the project, get paid, do what I like doing, and compromise my values OR I could be obedient to God, not give in on my values and wait for the right opportunity.
It seems pretty easy when I spell it out like that. I was so excited and my excitement got the better of me. The more I went to the Lord in prayer over the situation, the more I got a sick feeling in my stomach. That’s when I ran across Solomon’s wise words in Proverbs 10:9, “People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will be exposed” (Proverbs 10:9 NLT). I wanted to walk in God’s will not my own, I want to build His Kingdom, not my own. There was a millisecond of letdown when I made my decision but the peace that surpassed that fractional second was way better than any compensation or recognition that I would have received. My stomach was no longer knotted up and I felt better having passed on the opportunity.
I think sometimes we have decisions that are clear, then there are the ones that fall into the gray area. That’s when we have to take it back to God and ask Him. Seek His will, His way, and His Word.
Heavenly Papa, thank You for Your Word. Forgive me when I chose my way over Yours. Help me to walk in integrity, following Your will for my life. Thank you, Lord, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
