What’s In Your Garden

As I look at the vast garden ahead, I think of all the hard work that will be involved this season.  The literal sweat and tears that this plot of land will see this summer.  Our family has started the planting and  hopefully within a few weeks we will see sprouts of vegetation emerging from the soil.  As we water and feed our plants, it makes me think about my Christian walk.  I have to feed my soul daily with the Word and prayer.  I have to continuously do heart and mental checks on myself.  When it’s time for the weeding, I start praying while I weed.  God what do you see in me that needs to go?  Bitterness, resentment?  Fear?  Vanity?  God pluck it from me.

My garden time is my time with God.  As we plant, I pray that the harvest will be plenty and help make our family healthy and strong.  I pray as we weed, and cultivate the land, and as I water the plants.  I am reminded of John 4:13-14, when Jesus is speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well.

“Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again.  It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.’” (John 4:13-14 NLT).

I want to drink that living water that Jesus offers to each of us.  The water that He provides is a water that will quench your thirst and not make you thirsty any longer.  I want to plant the seeds of the fruit of the Holy Spirit so that I am producing good things as Paul talks about in Galatians 5:22-23.

“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!”(Galatians 5:22-23 NLT)

Today, take a few minutes to assess what is growing in the garden of your heart.  What are you cultivating there?  Are you planting seeds of goodness, love, and joy or are you planting seeds of resentment, bitterness, and unforgiveness?  If you want to learn more about this living water that Jesus offers, comment below.

Lord, thank You, for reminding us that the weeds don’t belong in our hearts.  Help us to cultivate the seeds of the fruits of the Spirit and to fully drink the living water that only You offer.  Thank You, Father.  In Jesus’ name. Amen.
