Sick and Tired But Still Trusting

Ever feel so sick and tired of the hardships in life that you get discouraged? When we are sick and tired but still trusting God, we move to peace that only He can provide.

I was so frustrated, another doctor visit, more tests, more unknowns. I was beyond tired, and I still am, and I am tired of being sick and tired. I’m frustrated that my healing hasn’t come yet. It’s easy to get down when you don’t feel well or things don’t seem to be going the way you think they should go. We’ve all been in a situation where we’ve been sick and tired, maybe it’s not your health, but a relationship, a financial situation, a prodigal, or work-related challenges.

How Long?

Do you find yourself asking God how long? How long will I endure this? How long until things change?

Often, we need to remind ourselves that Jesus is willing to heal our situation, but sometimes it’s just not on our timeline.

Psalm 13

King David asks the Lord how long, in Psalm 13, a psalm of lament, we find David asking the Lord about His timing. “O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way? How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day? How long will my enemy have the upper hand?” (Psalm 13:1-2 NLT). David didn’t question God once but four times about how long things would be like this. This psalm doesn’t give details on what challenge David was facing, but clearly he was sick and tired of the situation at hand.

He continues on, “Turn and answer me, O Lord my God! Restore the sparkle to my eyes, or I will die. Don’t let my enemies gloat, saying, ‘We have defeated him!’ Don’t let them rejoice at my downfall.” (Psalm 13:3-4 NLT). He seems defeated in his thinking about his current situation. Sometimes we just need to be honest with God about how we feel. Jesus also questioned God in Mark 15:34, as he hung on the cross. “‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ which means ‘My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?’” (Mark 15:34b NLT). David questioned if God had abandoned him in his time of need, as did Jesus.

Attitude Change

As David wraps up the last two verses, his tone changes, his attitude adjusts, reflecting his confidence in God.  “But I trust you in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me. I will sing to the Lord because he is good to me.” (Psalm 13:5-6 NLT). David trusted God to rescue him from his plight, even though David was tired of the current situation. He still trusted that God would deliver him from his enemies. He was confident in God rescuing him.

Sick and Tired But Still Trusting

It’s easy to be caught up in our circumstances, forgetting that God is faithful and He answers in His own timing, not ours. The next time you face those hard moments, when you question God, remember the words of King David, “Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently on the Lord.” (Psalm 27:14 NLT). God loves us, and His plans for our lives are good (Romans 8:28, Jeremiah 29:11).

When you find yourself questioning God, remember it’s okay to question Him; Jesus did. But remember David’s words, being brave and courageous while you wait on the Lord’s timing. We may be sick and tired but we are still trusting God to handle the circumstances in our lives.
