Hope and Healing from the Bleeding Woman’s Story

The story of the bleeding woman is one that sticks out to me. It’s one that I can relate to more than most. This story is from the bleeding woman’s perspective.

The dust cloud was visible for some distance on the horizon. The murmur of the crowd grew louder as I approached. So many bodies pressed around the Healer. His disciples gathered around him, trying to fend people off, using their arms to push people back from Jesus.

I tiptoed the dusty road, slowly stepping, trying not to draw attention to myself. I knew I shouldn’t be there; if anyone noticed me, it would cause a scene. But I had to try. It’s all I had left. One last effort, I’d already spent all my money on doctors, to no avail. I tried every natural remedy that they could produce. I was exhausted. But not just tired, overwhelmed, worn out from the bleeding, so tired I could barely stand most days. The hot, dusty days made me nauseated and weak.

I had heard of this man, this miracle worker. He was my last hope. As the crowd pushed in around him to get closer. The multitude of arms stretched out, vying for his attention. The crowd had become a mob of chaos. I quickened my steps to approach the crowd, reaching my arm into the crowd. Simultaneously praying, no one would notice who I was, and praying that I would find healing.

The Bleeding Woman Pushing Past Doubt

The crowd surrounding him pressed in so much that my weak knees buckled and I fell to the ground. Reaching out my right hand through the people’s legs and tunics, my fingers brushed against the hem of Jesus’ garment. My body felt different in that moment. In an instant, my bleeding stopped.

12 years of uncontrolled bleeding stopped. People shunned and isolated me for 12 years because they considered me an unclean outcast.

Jesus began turning frantically and looking around, asking who touched him. His disciples looked at him oddly, and one sarcastically answered him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” (Mark 5:31 NLT).

Jesus didn’t flinch at the question, but continued looking around to see who had touched his robe.

Fear in His Response

I was so frightened; I was trembling with fear that there would be repercussions for me if anyone found out it was me. My body trembled, I wrung my hands, and slowly stood up. Walking slowly towards the group of men, and fell at His feet. Trying to will my words to come out of my mouth.

Between the fear of what they would do to me when they found out and the fear that He would reverse my healing, I slowly spoke. “I have been sick for 12 years, an outcast due to my constant bleeding. I haven’t been able to talk to others or touch anyone. When I overheard that you were here today, I had to try. I’ve exhausted all my finances for doctors, and nothing seems to help; it only progressively gets worse. Hearing the crowd gave me hope that just maybe, if I could touch your robe, you would take pity on me and just maybe you would heal me.”

Your Faith Healed You

My head bowed while I was down on my knees at his feet, begging for mercy, without saying the words aloud. He bent down, touching my chin and lifting it to meet His gaze. “‘Daughter your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over’.” (Mark 5:34 NLT).

I thought for sure he was going to reprimand me for touching his robe. My entire body was still trembling, tears running down my cheeks. I lived with this condition for 12 years, then I healed instantly. Healed. I had almost given up hope of ever being healed, but I am now free from my suffering.

I gathered myself up from the dusty road and wiped my tears that continued to run down my cheeks.

My suffering was over. As I walked back home that day, I stood a little taller, a little stronger. I could smile and look people in the eyes as I passed them by. What a day. I was healed because I believed. My faith healed me.

Can You Relate?

Do you ever feel like the bleeding woman? Maybe you’ve been cast aside by society because of an illness or condition. I’m guessing you are lonely too. I can relate. I wrote this after seeing yet another doctor who had no answers for me. My family and I had traveled hundreds of miles through multiple states to get to this doctor. I hoped that I was finally going to get my healing. Yet, unfortunately, it wasn’t the reality of the visit.

My suffering has gone on for more than twelve years, but I know that one day I will be healed. I believe that wholeheartedly, it may not be on this side of heaven, but I do know that one day I will be healed. The passage about the bleeding woman who was healed by Jesus always gives me hope when I read it. Despite daily suffering, I find encouragement and hope in these verses. Where is your hope today?

Prayer

Lord, thank you for Your Word. I pray for those who feel alone and outcast, who are in search of healing. I lift those up to you that each one may find comfort in You, drawing closer to You. Thank You, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
