Just a few weeks ago, my yard was covered in a fresh blanket of snow. The third in three weeks. Before the surreal white blanket of snow, we had seventy-degree weather. Who would have thought that for three weeks the south would be blessed with snow? During those warm days, my daffodils peeped their stems through the red clay dirt. As I saw the snow melting away some days, I saw more little sprouts joining the cluster. I’m looking forward to brighter days, to warmer weather, and to those beautiful flowers that circle my maple tree in the backyard. I am filled with the hope that spring will come soon.
There are multiple references to gardens throughout the Bible, including God creating the plants on the third day (Genesis 1:11-13), and He placed Adam in a garden to work it (Genesis 2:15). Jesus spent his last day in a garden, praying and seeking the will of his Father. (Matthew 26:36). As I think of how the flowers must have been in the Garden of Eden, I wonder what they would have looked like. The unique colors and varieties, the details God uses to make each one unique. The lush vegetation was untouched by chemicals and remained in its natural splendor.
Jesus Cares For Us
Jesus shares the parable about worrying in Luke 12, illustrating how He cares for us like the sparrows and wildflowers. Have you ever considered what flowers would have been in Biblical times? Some of the wildflowers that Jesus speaks of in Matthew 6:28-29 and Luke 12:27-28 would be anemones and cyclamen.
Luke 12:27-28 NIV, “‘Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you–you of little faith!’”
Wildflowers
Anemones are beautiful poppy flowers that cover the hillsides in the Holy Land each spring still.
Also, cyclamen would be considered flowers of the field, known as Solomon’s crown. This is a familiar Christmas flower that has beautiful pinks and reds.
While my daffodils aren’t wildflowers and aren’t mentioned in the Bible. I find comfort knowing that the One who created me also created the beautiful flowers. The lush vegetation will soon be flourishing thanks to the abundance of snow. I’m constantly reminded that God created us in His image (Genesis 1:27) and He knitted us together in our mother’s womb. He created every little unique detail, each freckle, dimple, and gray hair (that God even knows the number of). God knows. God sees us. He cares for us and He created us. He knows the flowers by name. What God creates, man can not crush. Focusing on our aging bodies and feeling down is easy, but we should also remember that God remains in control.
The wildflowers don’t “labor and spin”. While all we do is seem to labor and spin. We labor to do as much as we can do, yet the wild flowers don’t. They are just there in beautiful splendor, the way God made them. When was the last time you didn’t labor and spin, but rested in knowing God had everything handled? Every day, it seems we are traveling at a breakneck pace. But I found during the snowstorms, everything had a new rhythm. Slower, more intentional, and way more enjoyable. God didn’t create us to labor all the time; He created us to rest. He too rested on the seventh day, and we should follow His example and do just that.
We Are Called
He created each of us in His image, His perfection. While it’s easy to pick our flaws and think God doesn’t care, what you call flaws, God calls perfection. When you think God doesn’t care, He cares about the little and the big stuff. God is for you. Some days we just need to be remember how He created us in His image and cares for us just like the sparrows and the wildflowers, and reminding ourselves we need to rest too. While spring is quickly approaching, I encourage you to find rest and renewal in the new season full of hope.
Prayer
Lord help me to stop and embrace rest while enjoying this new season. May this season be filled with hope and beauty. Forgive me for neglecting to rest and remember how you made us and care for us like the wildflowers. Thank you, Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
